A man identified by police as a high-risk offender is back in custody and awaiting a bail hearing after allegedly violating his release conditions less than two hours after leaving a Guelph, Ont., courtroom.

Medhani Yohans appeared briefly in bail court Tuesday morning, where he was remanded into custody. He is scheduled to return to court Wednesday.

Yohans had been released early Monday afternoon after pleading guilty to breaching a previous probation order. However, police say that within two hours of his release, officers saw him at an address he had been ordered to avoid and arrested him again.

The repeated breaches are among the reasons the Guelph Police Service has issued multiple public alerts over the past year and a half, including photos warning residents about his release into the community.

“Our community needs to know we are mindful of these situations,” Cobey said. “We are doing everything we can to make sure they are updated, they have the information they need, and we will also take the action that we deem appropriate to support them and secure their safety.”

Police describe Yohans as a high-risk offender who poses a particular danger to women.

In August 2024, he was released after serving a sentence for two sexual assaults involving strangers in Guelph. When he failed to report to Guelph police within seven days — a condition of his release — he was arrested.

Since then, Yohans has repeatedly been taken into custody for breaching court-ordered conditions tied to his release.
