UPDATE (Jan. 2, 2026): Vancouver police say Dean Robert Merrick has been arrested and taken into custody after a member of the public recognized him and notified authorities.
Earlier, the Vancouver Police Department said a Canada-wide warrant had been issued for Merrick, 58, after he failed to return to his halfway house in Vancouver.
Police said Merrick left the Downtown Eastside facility shortly before 9:30 a.m. PT on Dec. 31 for an appointment on Commercial Drive but did not come back as required.
According to police, Merrick previously served an 18-year sentence for sexual offences.
